This term implies the fall was random and unavoidable. It stops investigation. It hides modifiable risk factors.

When Margaret "tripped on her IV tubing," ask:
• Why didn't she SEE it? (Vision, cognition)
• Why couldn't she STEP over it? (Weakness, balance)
• Why couldn't she CATCH herself? (Reaction time, strength)

Every fall has underlying causes. "Mechanical fall" hides them.
